Importance of Roger Mason in ‘The Spire’
Roger Mason is a vital character in the novel, without whom there would be no spire at all. Even before the reader is introduced to Roger there are hints that he will be important to the plot. Jocelin's first mention of the phrase ââ¬Ëcost what you like' coincides with the first introduction to Roger; this foreshadows the sacrifice of Roger and the breakdown he suffers due to the pressure put on him by Jocelin, the spire and even his relationship with Goody Pangall. In many ways Roger can be seen as the strength behind the spire. From Golding's physical description of him, using phrases such as ââ¬Ëbullet head', ââ¬Ëlike a bear' and ââ¬Ëhis heavy eyebrows', the reader gains the impression that he is solid and his expertise in building shows him to be very factual and rational. Nearly all of Roger's attributes are the antithesis to Jocelin's; where Roger is down-to-earth, Jocelin is spiritual and deluded. Both men are compared to animals in the novel, Roger is likened to ââ¬Ëa bear' and a ââ¬Ëdog' whereas Jocelin is described as ââ¬Ëan eagle' and ââ¬Ëbeaky', Golding's choice of animals here show the reader how the two men have completely different views of the world. Roger's confrontation with Jocelin highlights the antithesis between them. Roger, as an earthy man, can see that the spire is dangerous and a nearly impossible concept and regards Jocelin's vision with ââ¬Ëcontempt and amusement', whereas Jocelin believes that it will be held up simply by his faith and prayer, ââ¬ËGod will provide'. These contrary descriptions reappear throughout the novel and intertwine their lives until, ironically, it becomes clear that the spire only gets built due to a combination of Jocelin's delusion and insistence on his vision and Roger's skill. Roger and Jocelin not only have opposing natures but also relationships and interactions with women. Jocelin fails, or refuses, to understand women but Roger has an unusually equal relationship for the medieval times with his wife and they are often seen together around the cathedral, ââ¬Ëinseparable'. His relationship with Rachel is important as it emphasises Jocelin's inability to deal with a woman who is ââ¬Ënot like a decent reticent Englishwoman' or ââ¬Ësilent Goody Pangall', Jocelin spends much of the novel trying to avoid Rachel and Golding continually describes her as a ââ¬Ëbody' or a ââ¬Ëface'. The fact that Roger can have a friendship with a woman that Jocelin cannot stand outlines their differences. Roger's other relationship with a woman is with Goody Pangall. Unlike his relationship with Rachel, his affair with Goody is passionate and is portrayed as love; Roger watches her walking ââ¬Ëas though nothing and no one in the whole world mattered'. When the reader first finds out about the affair, it is through Jocelin's perspective, ââ¬Ëhe saw this was one encounter of many. He saw pain and sorrow'. The pain and sorrow may be Jocelin's realisation that he will never have Goody or it may be sorrow in Roger for he has been forced into this by Jocelin. The novel has an inchoate structure that not only shows Jocelin's gradual descent into complete delusion and madness but the loose time frames with some chapters taking place over a month, others over six months also show Roger's growing dependence on alcohol. Golding finally turns the attention of the reader back to Roger when Jocelin visits him at the end of the novel. Roger has suffered a breakdown and is ââ¬Ëmoo-ing' and the reader can see the entire effect that Jocelin and the spire have had on his life. Roger's mental breakdown has turned him into a ââ¬Ëcrab', he is no longer the skilled and reliable ââ¬Ëbear' he was at the start of the novel. This presentation of Roger shows that he, too, has an irrational side and that he is not in fact that different to Jocelin, Roger turns to alcohol in times of stress and Jocelin turns to prayers, neither of which aid the two characters and these actions eventually end in their downfall. Roger and Jocelin are also not that different in their visions either. The first description of Roger contains the phrase ââ¬Ëhe could see nothing else, or hear or feel nothing else' showing that when Roger is working, nothing distracts him and he becomes oblivious to those around him. The presentation of Roger in this way once more joins him to Jocelin, before the reader has even been given a description of him. This illustrates how important Roger is to the novel and to Jocelin as a tool to build his vision. Overall I think that Golding's language when describing Roger is important because he is antithetical to Jocelin and therefore provides a comparison point. This has been used by Golding to draw attention to Jocelin's delusion and to allow the reader to see Jocelin's growing madness more clearly; however as the novel progresses it also becomes clear to the reader that Roger and Jocelin's characters become less and less contradictory. This is significant as it makes Jocelin's revelation at the end of the novel more pronounced and allows the reader to see that pure facts or pure faith are not effective, but it is a combination of the two that is needed for anything to be achieved.

A Game of Thrones Chapter Twenty-eight
Catelyn My lady, you ought cover your head,â⬠Ser Rodrik told her as their horses plodded north. ââ¬Å"You will take a chill.â⬠ââ¬Å"It is only water, Ser Rodrik,â⬠Catelyn replied. Her hair hung wet and heavy, a loose strand stuck to her forehead, and she could imagine how ragged and wild she must look, but for once she did not care. The southern rain was soft and warm. Catelyn liked the feel of it on her face, gentle as a mother's kisses. It took her back to her childhood, to long grey days at Riverrun. She remembered the godswood, drooping branches heavy with moisture, and the sound of her brother's laughter as he chased her through piles of damp leaves. She remembered making mud pies with Lysa, the weight of them, the mud slick and brown between her fingers. They had served them to Littlefinger, giggling, and he'd eaten so much mud he was sick for a week. How young they all had been. Catelyn had almost forgotten. In the north, the rain fell cold and hard, and sometimes at night it turned to ice. It was as likely to kill a crop as nurture it, and it sent grown men running for the nearest shelter. That was no rain for little girls to play in. ââ¬Å"I am soaked through,â⬠Ser Rodrik complained. ââ¬Å"Even my bones are wet.â⬠The woods pressed close around them, and the steady pattering of rain on leaves was accompanied by the small sucking sounds their horses made as their hooves pulled free of the mud. ââ¬Å"We will want a fire tonight, my lady, and a hot meal would serve us both.â⬠ââ¬Å"There is an inn at the crossroads up ahead,â⬠Catelyn told him. She had slept many a night there in her youth, traveling with her father. Lord Hoster Tully had been a restless man in his prime, always riding somewhere. She still remembered the innkeep, a fat woman named Masha Heddle who chewed sourleaf night and day and seemed to have an endless supply of smiles and sweet cakes for the children. The sweet cakes had been soaked with honey, rich and heavy on the tongue, but how Catelyn had dreaded those smiles. The sourleaf had stained Masha's teeth a dark red, and made her smile a bloody horror. ââ¬Å"An inn,â⬠Ser Rodrik repeated wistfully. ââ¬Å"If only . . . but we dare not risk it. If we wish to remain unknown, I think it best we seek out some small holdfast . . . â⬠He broke off as they heard sounds up the road; splashing water, the clink of mail, a horse's whinny. ââ¬Å"Riders,â⬠he warned, his hand dropping to the hilt of his sword. Even on the kingsroad, it never hurt to be wary. They followed the sounds around a lazy bend of the road and saw them; a column of armed men noisily fording a swollen stream. Catelyn reined up to let them pass. The banner in the hand of the foremost rider hung sodden and limp, but the guardsmen wore indigo cloaks and on their shoulders flew the silver eagle of Seagard. ââ¬Å"Mallisters,â⬠Ser Rodrik whispered to her, as if she had not known. ââ¬Å"My lady, best pull up your hood.â⬠Catelyn made no move. Lord Jason Mallister himself rode with them, surrounded by his knights, his son Patrek by his side and their squires close behind. They were riding for King's Landing and the Hand's tourney, she knew. For the past week, the travelers had been thick as flies upon the kingsroad; knights and freeriders, singers with their harps and drums, heavy wagons laden with hops or corn or casks of honey, traders and craftsmen and whores, and all of them moving south. She studied Lord Jason boldly. The last time she had seen him he had been jesting with her uncle at her wedding feast; the Mallisters stood bannermen to the Tullys, and his gifts had been lavish. His brown hair was salted with white now, his face chiseled gaunt by time, yet the years had not touched his pride. He rode like a man who feared nothing. Catelyn envied him that; she had come to fear so much. As the riders passed, Lord Jason nodded a curt greeting, but it was only a high lord's courtesy to strangers chance met on the road. There was no recognition in those fierce eyes, and his son did not even waste a look. ââ¬Å"He did not know you,â⬠Ser Rodrik said after, wondering. ââ¬Å"He saw a pair of mud-spattered travelers by the side of the road, wet and tired. It would never occur to him to suspect that one of them was the daughter of his liege lord. I think we shall be safe enough at the inn, Ser Rodrik.â⬠It was near dark when they reached it, at the crossroads north of the great confluence of the Trident. Masha Heddle was fatter and greyer than Catelyn remembered, still chewing her sourleaf, but she gave them only the most cursory of looks, with nary a hint of her ghastly red smile. ââ¬Å"Two rooms at the top of the stair, that's all there is,â⬠she said, chewing all the while. ââ¬Å"They're under the bell tower, you won't be missing meals, though there's some thinks it too noisy. Can't be helped. We're full up, or near as makes no matter. It's those rooms or the road.â⬠It was those rooms, low, dusty garrets at the top of a cramped narrow staircase. ââ¬Å"Leave your boots down here,â⬠Masha told them after she'd taken their coin. ââ¬Å"The boy will clean them. I won't have you tracking mud up my stairs. Mind the bell. Those who come late to meals don't eat.â⬠There were no smiles, and no mention of sweet cakes. When the supper bell rang, the sound was deafening. Catelyn had changed into dry clothes. She sat by the window, watching rain run down the pane. The glass was milky and full of bubbles, and a wet dusk was falling outside. Catelyn could just make out the muddy crossing where the two great roads met. The crossroads gave her pause. If they turned west from here, it was an easy ride down to Riverrun. Her father had always given her wise counsel when she needed it most, and she yearned to talk to him, to warn him of the gathering storm. If Winterfell needed to brace for war, how much more so Riverrun, so much closer to King's Landing, with the power of Casterly Rock looming to the west like a shadow. If only her father had been stronger, she might have chanced it, but Hoster Tully had been bedridden these past two years, and Catelyn was loath to tax him now. The eastern road was wilder and more dangerous, climbing through rocky foothills and thick forests into the Mountains of the Moon, past high passes and deep chasms to the Vale of Arryn and the stony Fingers beyond. Above the Vale, the Eyrie stood high and impregnable, its towers reaching for the sky. There she would find her sister . . . and, perhaps, some of the answers Ned sought. Surely Lysa knew more than she had dared to put in her letter. She might have the very proof that Ned needed to bring the Lannisters to ruin, and if it came to war, they would need the Arryns and the eastern lords who owed them service. Yet the mountain road was perilous. Shadowcats prowled those passes, rock slides were common, and the mountain clans were lawless brigands, descending from the heights to rob and kill and melting away like snow whenever the knights rode out from the Vale in search of them. Even Jon Arryn, as great a lord as any the Eyrie had ever known, had always traveled in strength when he crossed the mountains. Catelyn's only strength was one elderly knight, armored in loyalty. No, she thought, Riverrun and the Eyrie would have to wait. Her path ran north to Winterfell, where her sons and her duty were waiting for her. As soon as they were safely past the Neck, she could declare herself to one of Ned's bannermen, and send riders racing ahead with orders to mount a watch on the kingsroad. The rain obscured the fields beyond the crossroads, but Catelyn saw the land clear enough in her memory. The marketplace was just across the way, and the village a mile farther on, half a hundred white cottages surrounding a small stone sept. There would be more now; the summer had been long and peaceful. North of here the kingsroad ran along the Green Fork of the Trident, through fertile valleys and green woodlands, past thriving towns and stout holdfasts and the castles of the river lords. Catelyn knew them all: the Blackwoods and the Brackens, ever enemies, whose quarrels her father was obliged to settle; Lady Whent, last of her line, who dwelt with her ghosts in the cavernous vaults of Harrenhal; irascible Lord Frey, who had outlived seven wives and filled his twin castles with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and bastards and grandbastards as well. All of them were bannermen to the Tullys, their swords sworn to the service of Riverrun. Catelyn wondered if that would be enough, if it came to war. Her father was the staunchest man who'd ever lived, and she had no doubt that he would call his banners . . . but would the banners come? The Darrys and Rygers and Mootons had sworn oaths to Riverrun as well, yet they had fought with Rhaegar Targaryen on the Trident, while Lord Frey had arrived with his levies well after the battle was over, leaving some doubt as to which army he had planned to join (theirs, he had assured the victors solemnly in the afterma th, but ever after her father had called him the Late Lord Frey). It must not come to war, Catelyn thought fervently. They must not let it. Ser Rodrik came for her just as the bell ceased its clangor. ââ¬Å"We had best make haste if we hope to eat tonight, my lady.â⬠ââ¬Å"It might be safer if we were not knight and lady until we pass the Neck,â⬠she told him. ââ¬Å"Common travelers attract less notice. A father and daughter taken to the road on some family business, say.â⬠ââ¬Å"As you say, my lady,â⬠Ser Rodrik agreed. It was only when she laughed that he realized what he'd done. ââ¬Å"The old courtesies die hard, myââ¬âmy daughter.â⬠He tried to tug on his missing whiskers, and sighed with exasperation. Catelyn took his arm. ââ¬Å"Come, Father,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"You'll find that Masha Heddle sets a good table, I think, but try not to praise her. You truly don't want to see her smile.â⬠The common room was long and drafty, with a row of huge wooden kegs at one end and a fireplace at the other. A serving boy ran back and forth with skewers of meat while Masha drew beer from the kegs, chewing her sourleaf all the while. The benches were crowded, townsfolk and farmers mingling freely with all manner of travelers. The crossroads made for odd companions; dyers with black and purple hands shared a bench with rivermen reeking of fish, an ironsmith thick with muscle squeezed in beside a wizened old septon, hard-bitten sellswords and soft plump merchants swapped news like boon companions. The company included more swords than Catelyn would have liked. Three by the fire wore the red stallion badge of the Brackens, and there was a large party in blue steel ringmail and capes of a silvery grey. On their shoulder was another familiar sigil, the twin towers of House Frey. She studied their faces, but they were all too young to have known her. The senior among them would have been no older than Bran when she went north. Ser Rodrik found them an empty place on the bench near the kitchen. Across the table a handsome youth was fingering a woodharp. ââ¬Å"Seven blessings to you, goodfolk,â⬠he said as they sat. An empty wine cup stood on the table before him. ââ¬Å"And to you, singer,â⬠Catelyn returned. Ser Rodrik called for bread and meat and beer in a tone that meant now. The singer, a youth of some eighteen years, eyed them boldly and asked where they were going, and from whence they had come, and what news they had, letting the questions fly as quick as arrows and never pausing for an answer. ââ¬Å"We left King's Landing a fortnight ago,â⬠Catelyn replied, answering the safest of his questions. ââ¬Å"That's where I'm bound,â⬠the youth said. As she had suspected, he was more interested in telling his own story than in hearing theirs. Singers loved nothing half so well as the sound of their own voices. ââ¬Å"The Hand's tourney means rich lords with fat purses. The last time I came away with more silver than I could carry . . . or would have, if I hadn't lost it all betting on the Kingslayer to win the day.â⬠ââ¬Å"The gods frown on the gambler,â⬠Ser Rodrik said sternly. He was of the north, and shared the Stark views on tournaments. ââ¬Å"They frowned on me, for certain,â⬠the singer said. ââ¬Å"Your cruel gods and the Knight of Flowers altogether did me in.â⬠ââ¬Å"No doubt that was a lesson for you,â⬠Ser Rodrik said. ââ¬Å"It was. This time my coin will champion Ser Loras.â⬠Ser Rodrik tried to tug at whiskers that were not there, but before he could frame a rebuke the serving boy came scurrying up. He laid trenchers of bread before them and filled them with chunks of browned meat off a skewer, dripping with hot juice. Another skewer held tiny onions, fire peppers, and fat mushrooms. Ser Rodrik set to lustily as the lad ran back to fetch them beer. ââ¬Å"My name is Marillion,â⬠the singer said, plucking a string on his woodharp. ââ¬Å"Doubtless you've heard me play somewhere?â⬠His manner made Catelyn smile. Few wandering singers ever ventured as far north as Winterfell, but she knew his like from her girlhood in Riverrun. ââ¬Å"I fear not,â⬠she told him. He drew a plaintive chord from the woodharp. ââ¬Å"That is your loss,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Who was the finest singer you've ever heard?â⬠ââ¬Å"Alia of Braavos,â⬠Ser Rodrik answered at once. ââ¬Å"Oh, I'm much better than that old stick,â⬠Marillion said. ââ¬Å"If you have the silver for a song, I'll gladly show you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I might have a copper or two, but I'd sooner toss it down a well than pay for your howling,â⬠Ser Rodrik groused. His opinion of singers was well known; music was a lovely thing for girls, but he could not comprehend why any healthy boy would fill his hand with a harp when he might have had a sword. ââ¬Å"Your grandfather has a sour nature,â⬠Marillion said to Catelyn. ââ¬Å"I meant to do you honor. An homage to your beauty. In truth, I was made to sing for kings and high lords.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, I can see that,â⬠Catelyn said. ââ¬Å"Lord Tully is fond of song, I hear. No doubt you've been to Riverrun.â⬠ââ¬Å"A hundred times,â⬠the singer said airily. ââ¬Å"They keep a chamber for me, and the young lord is like a brother.â⬠Catelyn smiled, wondering what Edmure would think of that. Another singer had once bedded a girl her brother fancied; he had hated the breed ever since. ââ¬Å"And Winterfell?â⬠she asked him. ââ¬Å"Have you traveled north?â⬠ââ¬Å"Why would I?' Marillion asked. ââ¬Å"It's all blizzards and bearskins up there, and the Starks know no music but the howling of wolves.â⬠Distantly, she was aware of the door banging open at the far end of the room. ââ¬Å"Innkeep,â⬠a servant's voice called out behind her, ââ¬Å"we have horses that want stabling, and my lord of Lannister requires a room and a hot bath.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, gods,â⬠Ser Rodrik said before Catelyn reached out to silence him, her fingers tightening hard around his forearm. Masha Heddle was bowing and smiling her hideous red smile. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry, m'lord, truly, we're full up, every room.â⬠There were four of them, Catelyn saw. An old man in the black of the Night's Watch, two servants . . . and him, standing there small and bold as life. ââ¬Å"My men will steep in your stable, and as for myself, well, I do not require a large room, as you can plainly see.â⬠He flashed a mocking grin. ââ¬Å"So long as the fire's warm and the straw reasonably free of fleas, I am a happy man.â⬠Masha Heddle was beside herself. ââ¬Å"M'lord, there's nothing, it's the tourney, there's no help for it, oh . . . ââ¬Å" Tyrion Lannister pulled a coin from his purse and flicked it up over his head, caught it, tossed it again. Even across the room, where Catelyn sat, the wink of gold was unmistakable. A freerider in a faded blue cloak lurched to his feet. ââ¬Å"You're welcome to my room, m'lord.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now there's a clever man,â⬠Lannister said as he sent the coin spinning across the room. The freerider snatched it from the air. ââ¬Å"And a nimble one to boot.â⬠The dwarf turned back to Masha Heddle. ââ¬Å"You will be able to manage food, I trust?â⬠ââ¬Å"Anything you like, m'lord, anything at all,â⬠the innkeep promised. And may he choke on it, Catelyn thought, but it was Bran she saw choking, drowning on his own blood. Lannister glanced at the nearest tables. ââ¬Å"My men will have whatever you're serving these people. Double portions, we've had a long hard ride. I'll take a roast fowlââ¬âchicken, duck, pigeon, it makes no matter. And send up a flagon of your best wine. Yoren, will you sup with me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Aye, m'lord, I will,â⬠the black brother replied. The dwarf had not so much as glanced toward the far end of the room, and Catelyn was thinking how grateful she was for the crowded benches between them when suddenly Marillion bounded to his feet. ââ¬Å"My lord of Lannister!â⬠he called out. ââ¬Å"I would be pleased to entertain you while you eat. Let me sing you the lay of your father's great victory at King's Landing!â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing would be more likely to ruin my supper,â⬠the dwarf said dryly. His mismatched eyes considered the singer briefly, started to move away . . . and found Catelyn. He looked at her for a moment, puzzled. She turned her face away, but too late. The dwarf was smiling. ââ¬Å"Lady Stark, what an unexpected pleasure,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I was sorry to miss you at Winterfell.â⬠Marillion gaped at her, confusion giving way to chagrin as Catelyn rose slowly to her feet. She heard Ser Rodrik curse. If only the man had lingered at the Wall, she thought, if only . . . ââ¬Å"Lady . . . Stark?â⬠Masha Heddle said thickly. ââ¬Å"I was still Catelyn Tully the last time I bedded here,â⬠she told the innkeep. She could hear the muttering, feel the eyes upon her. Catelyn glanced around the room, at the faces of the knights and sworn swords, and took a deep breath to slow the frantic beating of her heart. Did she dare take the risk? There was no time to think it through, only the moment and the sound of her own voice ringing in her ears. ââ¬Å"You in the corner,â⬠she said to an older man she had not noticed until now. ââ¬Å"Is that the black bat of Harrenhal I see embroidered on your surcoat, ser?â⬠The man got to his feet. ââ¬Å"It is, my lady.â⬠ââ¬Å"And is Lady Whent a true and honest friend to my father, Lord Hoster Tully of Riverrun?â⬠ââ¬Å"She is,â⬠the man replied stoutly. Ser Rodrik rose quietly and loosened his sword in its scabbard. The dwarf was blinking at them, blank-faced, with puzzlement in his mismatched eyes. ââ¬Å"The red stallion was ever a welcome sight in Riverrun,â⬠she said to the trio by the fire. ââ¬Å"My father counts Jonos Bracken among his oldest and most loyal bannermen.â⬠The three men-at-arms exchanged uncertain looks. ââ¬Å"Our lord is honored by his trust,â⬠one of them said hesitantly. ââ¬Å"I envy your father all these fine friends,â⬠Lannister quipped, ââ¬Å"but I do not quite see the purpose of this, Lady Stark.â⬠She ignored him, turning to the large party in blue and grey. They were the heart of the matter; there were more than twenty of them. ââ¬Å"I know your sigil as well: the twin towers of Frey. How fares your good lord, sers?â⬠Their captain rose. ââ¬Å"Lord Walder is well, my lady. He plans to take a new wife on his ninetieth name day, and has asked your lord father to honor the wedding with his presence.â⬠Tyrion Lannister sniggered. That was when Catelyn knew he was hers. ââ¬Å"This man came a guest into my house, and there conspired to murder my son, a boy of seven,â⬠she proclaimed to the room at large, pointing. Ser Rodrik moved to her side, his sword in hand. ââ¬Å"In the name of King Robert and the good lords you serve, I call upon you to seize him and help me return him to Winterfell to await the king's justice.â⬠She did not know what was more satisfying: the sound of a dozen swords drawn as one or the look on Tyrion Lannister's face.

Disscusion 3 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Disscusion 3 - Essay Example The second session was easier because I had time to prepare, and I was aware of what to expect, and so I prepared a plan, statements and questions to aid in the therapy. At the end of the termination, I gave the couple some referrals to professional counselors in their area, and these were Carol Erb, Ph.D of Pathways Christian Counseling, Dwight Robinson M.A. and Kim Neese, MA of Professional Counseling. The success that was realized in these sessions was not only because of my counseling skills, but also because of the kind of interventions that I used for the therapy. Some of the approaches I used that worked effectively include assessment of genogram, which involved constituting relevant questions to help obtain relevant information involving each partnerââ¬â¢s family history in genealogy, family therapy and treatment, as well as use of questionnaires. Other approaches include, building love maps, which is achieved through constituting question, which will help to gauge knowledge of inner psychological world, fears, joys, hopes and his or her history. This to measure cognitive room partners possess for their relationship, and finally, involve the couple in a conversation session on how they met, what ideologies they share and differs. The PIAR2 Test was the primary assignment that I gave to the couple and as expected it contributed enormously to the intervention and success of achieving counseling goals. The most helpful aspects of the PAIR2 test were the scales, in which the couple showed compatibility and those that they showed extreme disparity. For example, the couple showed disparity in Order and Routine and also Social Status while compatibility was witnessed in Self-Acceptance, Change and Variety, Esthetic Pleasures among others. These helped in exploring the strengths and weaknesses of the parties, and consequently help them understand one

Store locations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Store locations - Essay Example To further deal with the marketability of the location, with regards to the aforementioned pharmacy, obtaining location and marketability data from two of its branches is a perfect barometer in determining how the location of the said establishment is essential in determining the feasibility of it. This study focuses on two selected branches of Walgreens in Miami and how will those branches show profitability and compliance with several criteria on why these locations were selected among others. Furthermore, this study aims to establish that location is indeed one of the most important factors to consider in putting-up a business enterprise in dealing with the marketability and profitability of the company. By analyzing two selected branches of Walgreens with regards to location, it would be possible to track the strong and weak points of the establishment with regards to its location and how this element affects the over-all standing of a certain business. This branch is situated almost in the center of Miami, Florida. ... A certain commercial online real estate described this location between Footlocker and Burdines Department store; this store will draw from both the local resident and daytime population, and the foreign tourists and more than 25 million cruise line passengers visiting Miami annually2. The description alone of the website would give the idea that the place is indeed visited by different people of different classification in which the store has a huge opportunity of being seen and visited by people because of its accessibility to the customers. However, analyzing the goods and services that Walgreens offer, it is very important to know, how many of these people would avail the goods and services it gives In other words, how many customers the store would be able to obtain from those people who manage to pass the location where the branch is located In these cases, it is also important to know the classification of the location in order to know if the place is indeed marketable for this enterprise to click and prosper. If we are to analyze, there are several hospitals and allied services in Florida that are located in the aforementioned street and would be an important factor for the said branch to obtain customers. It is established that these institutions needs the services of the said branch and therefore, the marketability of the branch is now clearer and established. The likes of Miami Children's Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Miami Heart Institute and Medical Center and other hospitals boost the chances of the said branch to penetrate the market with regards to the goods and services it offers. Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations Coursework
Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations - Coursework Example The auditing criteria which we applied in the analysis were in accordance with the U.S generally acceptable auditing standards. According to the regulations, we are required to undertake the audit process so that assurance is provided to the company that no sign of material misstatement was exhibited in their financial statements. The audit considered assessment of accounting principles, the presentation of statements and the supporting evidences for the amount and disclosures as provided by the financial statements of the organization. Being a respected institution in the field, our opinion would be an asset for future financial management plan. Under this section the analysis would show an evaluation of the general financial profile of the organization. The interpretation of the HCF data would be captured which will summarize the figures as extracted from the combined financial statements of cash flow, balance sheet, equity statement and income statement as was prior prepared by the organization. Historical figure-prove with evidence that Jesus actually excited Research Paper
Historical figure-prove with evidence that Jesus actually excited - Research Paper Example In the simplest terms, this is the case of Paul having the means to verify through James whether he had a brother Jesus or not. This is a natural means of verifying Jesusââ¬â¢ existence through relationships verification. This same process works in the case of for Paul directly knowing Peter, the disciple who is nearest to Jesus. If Jesus did not exist, then Peter would have told Paul so. This is common sense, given the public nature of Pauls work. Peter would have corrected him if Jesus did not exist. Also, Jesus being a life-defining figure for Paul, it would have been fantastic if he did not try to discuss Jesus with Peter and James. Peter and James would have corrected hm if Jesus did not exist. The personal relationships of Paul with James and Peter therefore stand as very solid pieces of evidence for the historical existence of Jesus. In turn, Pauls life accounts in the Bible can be taken as concrete evidence for the same (Ehrman, 2012). In Galatians 2, we have an account of the precise nature of that personal relationship and interaction between James the brother of Jesus and Paul, with Paul attesting to his being accepted by the disciples as a representative of the church to the Gentiles, in the same manner that Peter was the apostle for those who were part of the group of circumcised people. ââ¬Å"James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me (Galatians 2:9 New International Version). In Galatians 1, too, Paul narrates his personal close contact with Peter, who he calls Cephas, and his encounter with James. This was when he visited Jerusalem, and when he stayed there with Peter for fifteen days: ââ¬Å"Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Cephas and stayed with him fifteen days. I saw none of the other apostlesââ¬âonly James, the Lordââ¬â¢s brotherâ⬠(Galatians 1:18-19). Evans (2012), on the other hand, focuses on the

Gangs Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Gangs - Essay Example Different Approaches and Responses to Gangs Due to the negative effects of the gangs to the community, it is a challenging feat to deal with them, thus, there are different approaches that are being applied to prevent and to resolve problems related to gangs. The approaches and responses of the community to the gangs are based on the different factors related to the personal, the family, the social and the legal aspects of the society. The individual and family approach is the primary way to resolve gang behavior since the individual person can be isolated. For that matter, programs targeting the education of the family members and the individual gang member are included in the main actions undertaken to resolve gang problems. But there challenge in resolving gang related problem is the fact that teenagers and adolescents are very susceptible to gang membership and other delinquent activities due to peer pressure and the presence of different gangs in the community and in school. Bas ed on the survey of national schools, 7.6% of male and 3.8% of female in the secondary school students are gang members with activities such as fighting, stealing or selling drugs. Not only can these activities endanger them, gang membership can also affect the school performance and safety of the teenagers (Egley, Mason and Miller, 2006, p.362; (Gatti et al., 2005). Other reasons for gang membership and delinquency that are needed to be taken into consideration are the effects of ââ¬Å"poverty, unemployment, and decline of the family in American citiesâ⬠(Egley, Mason and Miller, 2006, p.313). The family-based policies and programs are effective to prevent the delinquent behaviors through parent support and guidance as well as personality development. Another approach to the gangs and their activities is through community-based programs and social interventions. The programs applied in such level are considered immediate and short-term responses to violence and crisis of the members and the victims of the gangs. The neighborhood, schools and localities are included in the programs implemented in the community-based levels. Commonly, local government units and NGOs in the localities are the groups working to find solutions to the problems. Their goals are specific to the needs of the community which includes crisis intervention, treatment and emergency medical care for the children and their families, and the law enforcement activities (p.313). An example of the community-based organization is the Boston Gun Project. It started as an organization to counteract gang activities in Boston by ââ¬Å"assembling interagency work group, applying quantitative and qualitative research methods for the study and assessment of the problem related to gangs, developing, implementing and evaluating interventionsâ⬠(p.338). The community based programs and policies are effective for immediate results and for solutions that are specific to the needs of the particula r community. The legal aspect is one of the most important approaches to the problems of gangs. Due to the rise of the gang problems in the 1980s, there had been a wake up call in the legislative needs in terms of gang problems. The California Street Terrorism Enforcement and
Islam, Christianity And Buddhism In The Post Classical Era Essay
Islam, Christianity And Buddhism In The Post Classical Era - Essay Example By confusion, it is meant that there was no particular ruling force and everything was haphazard taking on its own directions. To sum it up, The Roman Empire, Gupta Empire of India and Han Dynasty of China had been overthrown. This meant that the large populations that these Empires ruled over were left without a leader, direction as well as discipline. This further more led to the instability of political and economic conditions of the region. Hence this period specifically highlights the changes and innovations that were made in order to overcome this chaotic situation. A major part of these changes was the spread of three major religions, namely: Islam, Christianity and Buddhism. (2012-2013 APWH Unit 3: The Post Classical Age - Howard's History 2013) When these typical classical and royal Empires fell, the only way out of it was an automatic power to take over. And this automatic power was taken over by the religions of those times. As mentioned above, these three religions are am ongst the most commonly practiced religions of todayââ¬â¢s times. ... Now that we are focusing on Islam and the changes that it brought in Arabia especially, because this is where the basic advent of Islam started. Before the post classical era, Arabia was a place of great hospitality but little rules and peace. Arabs were always caught up in some war or battle; they were unsophisticated and would spend a larger portion of their life by taking revenges. Clans were the way of living, loyalty to oneââ¬â¢s clan was considered to be of great importance and disloyalty meant nothing but straight away. 3 Moreover, Arabs by profession were traders. However, there was a distinct difference in classes, there was an elite class and then there was the labor class. To put it in small, easy words, Arabia was in a total disarray and required revolution in order to set things right. And obviously, this revolution was brought when Islam came into being with the birth of Muhammad, who claimed to be the last prophet of Allah. Islam brought it with it a complete packag e of life; it was a religion of peace and prosperity. It provided rights to everyone, from elites, to slaves and animals even. The status of women was affected greatly when Islam came into the picture. Previously, women had little or no rights but after Islam came their way, this was one of the many things that changed. (KschlegelApwHP2 - The First Global Civilization The Rise and Spread of Islam 2013) After the death of Muhammad, Islam had become quite popular in Arabia itself. People had started accepting Islam due to its message of equality and sense of balance between everything. It eradicated every such bad thing that could harm the human race in any way. Islam is a religion of peace and it gave rights to

Carrie Fisher - Bipolar Disorder Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Carrie Fisher - Bipolar Disorder - Research Paper Example Bipolar Disorder is one that has been affecting so many lives until now. To be able to understand this better, Bipolar Disorder is commonly known as manic-depressive illness which is one kind of brain disorder that causes one to have an extreme change of mood, energy, and activity levels that prevents one to carry out a day to day task. Though the symptoms are not easily seen as a mental disorder, it is usually severe (NIMH à · Bipolar Disorder., n.d.). As opposed to mood swings that could be affected by menstrual cycle, a sudden change or turnaround of circumstances, bipolar disorder is a continuous cycle that cannot be controlled. It can result to inconsistency, poor performance at work, or even suicide. However, what is great to know is that this can be cured through a series of rehabilitation programs. One of the most famous cases of Bipolar disorder would be that of Carrie Fisher. She is an American actress, novelist, and a screen writer that no doubt put most of her life in th e spotlight. However, things started getting a bit blurry when Carrie started not being able to sleep or stop talking which she thought was just part of being in Hollywood. According to one article, she immediately resorted to trips to rehabilitation centers as she abruptly realized it was nothing but depression that was causing her to act a certain way (Carrie Fisher and her life with Bipolar Disorder | bphope., n.d.). This presentation of Bipolar Disorder is inconsistent as this certain disorder is believed through study and experience as one that is not easily spotted when it starts. The symptoms are always considered as the effects of another problem and never considered the main problem. For a lot of people, they suffer for years first before they realize they are suffering from bipolar disorder. In the article I am citing on Carrie Fisherââ¬â¢s battle with Bipolar Disorder, the author pointed out that Carrie started acting out extreme emotions when she was in her adult year s, while she was on top of her game. Well, this is a consistent fact about Bipolar Disorder as it is one that usually develops in oneââ¬â¢s late teens or early adult years though almost half of all cases start before the age 25 (NIMH à · Bipolar Disorder., n.d.). Another interesting fact about how the author foretold the case of Carrie is that, finally, when Carrie Fisher was able to learn about her Bipolar disease, she did not hide it from the public or seen it as something that needed hiding. Instead, she chose to make her battle against it part of her public persona by even speaking about it in public to help others who are suffering from the same illness overcome it. This is consistent with the reality of the disease as Bipolar Disorder is a long-term illness that cannot be cured by one time intake of medicine but is something that could be defeated through a step by step effort everyday, all throughout a personââ¬â¢s life. With this inspiring story that is shared to us u ntil today through the life of Carrie Fisher, we all must know that mental diseases are something that we must take seriously. This is because of the number of families today that cease to

Pros and cons of working at home Essay Example for Free
Pros and cons of working at home Essay Many people work at home using modern technology today. Some people think only the worker benefit from this, not the employers. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Essay: Technology is rapidly changing everything in the world, including the way people work. Working at home, as a new mode of work enabled by internet and multimedia technologies, is getting increasingly popular in some industries, especially the burgeoning IT sector. However, people have differing views on this new work mode. For example, it is believed that it only benefits employees, rather than the employers. I tend to agree with this view to large degree.Among all the differing views people have on this new work mode, Iââ¬â¢m very inclined to the view that it only benefits employees, rather than employers. Apparently, by no means can the benefits of working at home for employees cannot be denied. To start with, nothing can be more comfortable and relaxing than working in their oneââ¬â¢s own homes which are the most familiar environment to them. They He even can even settle back in their his soft sofa in his living halls, and drink have their his favouritefavorite drinks, or even enjoy an exciting action movie while working on their laptops. In addition, they an employee also havecould have much time to spend with their his family if theyhe could do his work at home. This new mode of work might be the most effective remedy for many family problems that are caused by the lack of time to be with family. They even can have meals with spouse and kids or see them anytime they like. Furthermore, an employ working at home could be saved working at home can save employees much expense and time that would spent on their way to and from work every day. However, what is unfair to employers is that they can hardly benefit from this new work mode, except that some overhead, like office rent and water/electricity bills, can be saved. The most unfavourable worrying problem of this new mode has to do with team building. A lack of face-to-face communication between team members employees that work at their own homesdue to their different locations, can could essentially undermine the team spirit and also is also likely to cause problemscreate barriers for in collaboration and cooperation between them team members. Similarly, it also could set intangible obstacle hurdles to team managers in their day-to-day team management, for it. It will bewould be rather difficult for mangers to supervise employees and monitor their performance. Inà conclusion, although technology makes working at home mode possible, the only one beneficiary of this advancement is the employees. What employers and manager can get from it is will be nothing but troubles in the end.

Reflective Writing on the meaning of Leadership
Reflective Writing on the meaning of Leadership During the first workshop of PASBD, I was in a way taught by our lecture, that working in a group or a team, every member is an important key to achievements, and having a leader is important to keep the team on track as well as lead the team to achieve goals. Leadership can be seen as a counteractive influence when groups experience difficulties in establishing the conditions necessary for making the best possible choice Dennis Gouran (qtd. in Beebe Masterson 2006). Therefore, a leader always gave me an impression that he or she has to be brilliant with good leadership skills, thinking that if a group is lack of a skillful or brilliant leader, a team would most probably fail. Throughout the semester I came to see the importance of a leader, but not as a dominant to the entire team. I felt that having a vertical leadershipà [1]à is somehow not so appropriate in completing our task as a group in this subject; rather Shared Leadership will be more appropriate used to explain our g roup. Having a leader is crucial to keep the team going, however a team does not restrict to only one leader. According to Pearce Conger (2003) leadership is broadly distributed among a set of individual instead of centralizes in hands of a single individual who acts in the role of a superior, referring this as Shared Leadership Craig Jay, (2003), which is the process of influencing each other in a team, leading each other to achieve a certain goal or achievement, where leadership is carried out by the team as a whole, rather than solely by an individual alone.à [2]à . In our group, I felt that each group member has a very important role to keep the team going, having each with different skill contributing to a team will only keep the team resourceful, and unlock the thinking by bringing in new idea. Benne and Sheats, 1948, (qtd. In Craig Jay, 2003), raised that team members had actually the roles that is as critical as the team leader, where leadership is a reciprocal process. And the roles are divided by Benne and Sheats into two categories, which are Task Roleà [3]à and Socioemotional Rolesà [4]à . In my own opinion, I felt that I am most suitable to be classified as the Socioemotional Roles in a team, where I played most of the role as a group observer or as a follower. I do not enjoy leading a team dominantly, most of the time it will depend on situation where I felt suitable to contribute, usually collecting each group member opinion and idea before deciding on which suggestion is most appropriate to be taken up. Team Role Considering the team role, define as A tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way. Belbins (1993) I would consider myself as a Monitor Evaluator Belbins (1993), being describe as having the characteristic of sober, strategic, discerning, able to sees all options and could judges accurately. A Monitor Evaluator in a team is needed to provide a logical eye, make impartial judgments where required and to weigh up the teams options in a dispassionate wayà [5]à . This stands in a part of my personality, where I often not like to make a judgment without knowing the actual situation. During a group discussion, I usually observe the interaction and the statements of others before I start putting more of my opinions. It is important to have delegated team role in a group, with the different combination of characteristic, the team can only help each other to meet up all the requirements needed to complete the task. Due to the different characteristic of members in a group, it leads to a certain disagreement between members during the completion of the task. However to get job done, members of a group often need some corporation to a certain extent. In my situation I find it sometimes difficult to coordinate with group members who are in the team role of a Shaperà [6]à , where they have the tendency to hurt people feeling on some statement they made, without realizing it. Their actions often speak louder than words, made me feel annoying and difficult to concentrate. Despite the characteristics which I do not like about Shaper, they are actually important in providing drive to ensure that the team kept moving and did not lose focus or momentum, Belbins (1993). On the other hand, I most enjoy te aming with members with the role of Co-coordinatorà ², where they often delegates well, and will seek for advice for other members, allowing each members to feel the respect and involved in to team. According to Beebe Masterson (2006), Not only group members need a mutual concern to unite them, but they also need to feel they belong to a group. Nevertheless, each Team Role has its own contribution; however there are also allowable weakness Belbins (1993), where allowable weaknesses are the downside of the characteristics of the roles, which is allowable due to the strength which goes with it. As for my role as a Monitor Evaluator, I have the weakness of being said to lack of drive and ability to inspire others, and overly critical, Belbin (1993). I often realize this weakness of mine and attempt to change, by trying to say things to keep the discussion in progress. Weakness offers clues to a possible strength, Belbins (1993), knowing my own weaknesses could help to improve more in the future. I believe that by making use of my weakness appropriately, it could transform into strength. Working in Team/Group Working in a group is different from working individually. Working individually allows having flexibility in time management, as I can plan my own schedule to work on the assignment, as well as deciding on something without have to seek discussion or the opinion of other group members. When working in group, one of the major frustration about group work is the time it takes to accomplish task Beebe Masterson (2006). Working in a group, it needs much cooperation from each group members to get things done effectively and efficiently. This includes encouraging the group members to attend the discussion meeting, and ensuring every group member to take on the responsibility to complete their task assigned, If we want a better solution, it is going to take time, patients, and understanding, Beebe Masterson (2006). Because working in a group involves a few individuals, and few individual usually means involving different time to suit, as each has own different daily activities. This will create some difficulties in finding the correct time and place that is convenient for all to hold a discussion meeting. On the other hand, I also find many advantages in working in a group. Having a group of people working together is like pooling of skills and knowledge, and this will to certain extent speed up the researching process and the decision making. Working together with a few person, allows to have discussion on problems and solutions, increasing the probability of picking the error done by another, and could pool different opinion to a problem. There are different types of group according to Beebe Masterson (2006); there are the primary group and secondary group. Primary group members associate with one another to perpetuate the joy of community, to fulfill the basic human needs to be social Beebe Masterson (2006), therefor the conversation is informal. Secondary group is what I would classify as our group, as the secondary groups exist to accomplish task or achieve goal the reason you join secondary group is to get something done Beebe Masterson (2006). Our group is assigned with a take to complete every week, we gather to solve the problem in the task given. Further, our group could also be classifying as the Focus Group, where we have a goal to focus, as well as given a particular topic to follow, Beebe Masterson (2006). In order to get the group working well there are two most important behavior of group member based on Michael Mayer, Beebe Masterson (2006), these behavior encourage members to participate fully in the discussion, especially in analyzing problem, and, offer supportive comments to others, Beebe Masterson (2006). To me, having these behaviors can only our group fully utilize the skills and knowledge we have to achieve the best result possible. However, working in groups, I had come through different types of personalities grouping. Some are in a dominating role, where without seeking permission from others, they tries too in a way give order to people telling them what to do. Trying to get ideas across group members who like to dominate is rather challenging for me, I had experience some hard time convincing on an idea. This experience gives me a lot of practice on my patients, and practicing different way of communicating an idea. Nevertheless, there are also group members who are B locks Progress and some are Social Loafing, Beebe Masterson (2006). Block Progress has an attitude which is often stubborn and disagreeable with no supportive reason. Social Loafing are people who attempt to rely on others to do their job, and hold back on their contribution, Beebe Masterson (2006). These group members will delay the progress of the group, keeping the group from achieving goals. From these, I had realized that to work together effectively, individuals must develop common goals and collective focus rather than pursuing only individual goals Beebe Masterson (2006). To get the work effectively done I will have learn to be a competent group communicator, Beebe Masterson (2006), to always have motivationà [7]à and have the ability to interact appropriately to achieve goal. Communication Having the ability to convey ideas through communication is very important when working in group, as Speech communication gives individual access to the ideas and inner world of other group members, Beebe Masterson (2006). Failure in communication well will cause misunderstanding, leading to conflict or inability to come out with a well done assignment. Problems of communication that I have faced are such as Bypassing and Allness Statement, Beebe Masterson (2006). Bypassing is when, I or my group member is trying to make a statement, we misunderstand the meaning of on a same word, and this had leaded us to produce or work not as required at first. Further is Allness Statement, means that some statement is simple but untrue generalization, Beebe Masterson (2006). Knowing that there are chances that we may misunderstand out group members word, I often like to summarize our discussion at the end of the meeting, to ensure that the message is got through clearly. Throughout the entire course, I found myself in groups are being generally low profile, in the sense where I prefer to monitor the progress of the group discussion and only give opinions when I felt I am needed to, in another words seeking for others to discover that I have something to say. Realizing that a group cannot function without words; communication is the vehicle that allows a group to move towards its goals Beebe Masterson (2006), I have encouraged myself to speak out more during a discussion. At the beginning I was struggling to get points out of my mouth, after few discussions, I had felt more comfortable. In order to be sure of my communication skill I had done a test through the internet, on a website call Test Yourselfà [8]à . The outcome of the test on my communication skill says that I am insightful, where I sometimes have difficulties interpreting other peoples words and actions, and see things from their perspective, although I can generally sense what others are feeling and thinking relatively well. Conflict between group members Conflict, happens when members have disagreement over two or more options that a group can take, Beebe Masterson (2006), and A conflict occurs because people do not understand one another Beebe Masterson (2006). It is something difficult to avoid when involving contact between human, in terms of communication or what so ever. In my situation, while needed to work in a group of five, there are always chances of conflict happening once any members cant get into the same opinion. A group with more than two people will often add complexity and element of uncertainty to the Trans active communication process, and this will affect the outcome Beebe Masterson (2006). I would preferably try my best to avoid conflict when working in my group, as conflict will have negative impact on a group harmony and the outcome of our work, I will keep the group from completing its task, interferes with the quality of the groups decision or productivity, threatens the existence of the group Beebe Maste rson (2006). According to the book of communication in small groups, Beebe Masterson (2006), Communication scholars Gerald Milller and Mark Steinberg had identified three common types of interpersonal conflict; they are the pseudo-conflict, where people misunderstand one another, Simple conflict, where people disagree about issues, and, Ego conflict, when personalities clash, Beebe Masterson (2006). Throughout the entire course, I came through the three types of interpersonal conflict in a different way. These conflict does not happen when our group members first met, it all happen when we begin to know more about each characteristic and working style, then begin the disagreement between each other. The conflict that I found most challenging to deal with is the Ego Conflict, as in the situation when the group members become defensive about their position because they think they are being personally attacked, Beebe Masterson (2006). There are times where the entire progress of the task is being delayed, and other group members are put into pressure, by worrying if the deadline could be met. Fortunately, we managed to overcome these obstacles, meeting the deadline. Dealing with conflict, each individual will have different style in managing it. Even though working in a group, each will manage the conflict in their own way as the feel more comfortable with. I myself manage conflict in a Nonconfrontational Style, one of the three general styles of managing conflict by, Linda Putnam and Charmaine, according to Beebe Masterson (2006). Nonconfrontational Style explains that a person in managing the conflict face by working hard to avoid conflict with others, Beebe Masterson (2006). I do not like to go into argument with others, for any reason; I will feel very uncomfortable to communicate or rather become speechless, when things begin to feel unpleasant. Thus, I would choose to withdraw myself to a certain extent, until the situation become calmer before I start to sort things out by communicating with the group member. Avoiding an immediate attack from another group member may give you time to think of more appropriate response rather than blurti ng out the first thing come to your mind Beebe Masterson (2006). However, in some situation, Avoiding conflict does not make the source of problem go away, it still exist Beebe Masterson (2006). When the conflict became too critical to be left to calm by itself, it cant be avoided by keeping quiet, things would have gotten worst if so. In this, no matter how uncomfortable I am to face the conflict, I still have to stand out to solve the problem, trying not to make things reach the extent where, group members turn into enemies. If others are unlikely to change, then you may have to change yourself, Belbins (1993). Conclusion Going through the entire PASBD course is a whole process of learning, teaching in the lecture, and through experience. From the lecture, I had learned on skills of presentation as well as got more understanding on the topic of PASBD. What I gain from the lecture are actually from the experience of others, and I can only understand it theoretically, if I did not got the true experience I can never have the real feeling of what the theories actually trying to convey. Mr. JJ said something about experience, the meaning is roughly of: experiencing the process is like riding a roller coaster; you will not want others to tell u about it, it is what you need to feel for yourself through your real experience. It is through the experience that I could utilize what I learned, and physically going through the process allowing me to have deeper impression on the leanings. Belbins (1993) had also mentioned something about experience learning, saying that Like competing in the Olympic Games, the g reat thing is to have taken part. Unless people enrol for the event, they cannot win the race. What we do will be what we learn; people equipped themselves for work through working, and through the lessons learned through experience, Beebe Masterson (2006).

Study On World War II And Casablanca
Study On World War II And Casablanca Casablanca is a classic World War II movie set in December and in the year of 1941 in Casablanca, Morocco, which was the location for people seeking to find an exit port to depart to the United States in order to escape the terrible conditions of the war in Europe as well as the Nazi concentration camps. This movie was set before the involvement of the United States in World War II and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The movie depicted the urban society with people belonging to the different ranges from low, middle and upper classes. There were also government officials such as Major Strasser, Captain Louis and the Czech nationalist Victor Laszlo. The characters are fictional, but they symbolize the different factors of World War II and their role during this time period. This film was produced in the year of 1942, which was the period when United States was awakened by the attack on their Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor by the Japanese air force and navy. This film demonstrates t he conditions in Europe and the importance of the letters of transit, which allowed people to travel freely in Europe and the hope it gave to their survival and their dream of reaching America. Also the film projects Gestapo, which was the official secret police of Nazi-Germany that arrested Victor Laszlow and took him to the concentration camps, where he had to endure through an agonizing experience, which was foreseen through the scarring on his face. Also the idea of the concentration camps was expressed by Victor Laszlo, who was prominently against Nazi Germany. Also the movie depicted the control and influence of Germany in the Vichy French government. The main message that this film portrayed was the idea of neutrality. This film expressed that during times of war, it was difficult for a country to stay out, because eventually there were events and circumstances that provoked and drove them into the conflict as well. As hard as it was for Rick, who was an American, to stay neu tral out of the European political conflict, he was eventually influenced and driven into the fight against Nazi-Germany with his friendship with the French police Captain Louis by the end of the movie. This film portrayed the shift of one man from neutrality into the European political conflict and his support for the pro-Free French and being anti-Vichy. Rich portrayed the United States, which was neutral until the attack on Pearl Harbor, which brought the American government to the edge of only declaring war and joining the sides of the allies in order to protect and bring justice to humanity. During the time of war, all of the characters in the film had different backgrounds and nationalities. All of these factors influenced the different motives and feelings that these characters had to endure during World War II. Nazi officials were very strict and arrested those who were suspected of espionage or treason against their form of government and rule. Rick Blaine was portrayed as an isolated character from the European conflict, but due to him having the letters of transit and killing the Nazi Major Strasser, he eventually became involved into the fight and gave motivation to others to fight along the side of the Allies in order to defeat Hitler. Before Rick Blaine came to Casablanca and became the owner of the cafà ©, he was active in the political world in Spain and Ethiopia, where he supported many groups of people against the fascist rulers in those two countries. Even though he expressed that he shared no feelings of the terrible conditions of the war in Europe, he wa s still internally not satisfied with the current type of political system. Since he always had a strong disapproval of a dictatorial government, he also disapproved of the conditions and the nature of the Nazi Germany and their way of ruling other countries such as France and Czechoslovakia. Rick evolved after being heartbroken by the departure of Ilsa, who went to live forever with her husband, Victor, who everyone thought died, but who was very lucky to have survived. Rick lost that happiness that used to show when he was with her. Even though they met again, but only to struggle and to fight their way through Europe in order to escape from the Nazis claws, who were constantly on their tail and it was the reason that Rick and Ilsa had to leave Paris in order to prevent getting into any further trouble or being arrested by the German forces after the Germans seized and captured Paris in a glimpse and developed the new form of regime called the Vichy. Victor Laszlow was a Czech nationalist, who was a journalist and wanted to express to the world about the deeds of Nazi Germany and how they broke the rules set by the League of Nations. He was frustrated as a citizen after Germany took over Czechoslovakia. He is a man of pure heart, who was willing to sacrifice his life in order to ensure that Ilsa arrived in the United States safely. After Victor Laszlow was arrested by the Gestapo, he had to endure through the difficulties of the concentration camps and made it out alive in order to ensure that no other man or women like him had to struggle through the pain of such cruel aggressors. Due to his experience, he became a strong and a brave man, who denied the fear of death and was not weakened by the intimidation of the Nazis. He only symbolized the devastation and fall of Germany. Mainly, he portrayed the heroic characteristics in a person, but most importantly he represented significantly as a resistance leader, who was willing do a nything in his power to destroy and defeat the Nazis from the fate of this world. He was an important factor and became a very valuable piece as he took the side of the Allies in his battle against justice and peace. Even though Rick wanted to leave with Ilsa in order to escape from this cruel hemisphere, he learned the importance of his existence as he sacrificed his love for Ilsa and took on the side of the Allies and in support of the Free French. At the end of the film, instead of departing with Ilsa, he gave the transit of letters to Ilsa and Victor so they can continue to reveal the truth of the Germans and their corrupt, political environment and succeed in their motives, while he decided to continue his political cause against an unjust government and the corrupt people who control it. Rick was going to start a new beginning through a new friendship by leaving his love behind. He was going to join Louis in a political alliance through becoming freedom fighters and aiding the Allies against their continual fight against the Central Powers. Rick and Louis became connected due to their similar beliefs and decisions to leave Casablanca for Brazzaville. Also Rick and Louis friendship was the r epresentation of American French alliance, which included French resistance groups and others who disliked the Germans. Despite the surrender and defeat of France to Germany, the underground resistance was still very strong and unified. However many people from France tried to escape the miserable rules of the Nazis, specifically after Germany took over Paris. The survival of the resistance holds more meaning by the end of the film than the preservation of love shared by Rick and Ilsa. Even though the Vichy French government limited the political independence, the French people still wanted to arise and take back their country. The Vichy government limited the rise of a powerful French nationalism due to the fact that many French officers took the side of the superior side that held power and disregarded the difference between right and wrong. Just like Louis transformation to a resistance idealist, many alike him will follow his path in order to ensure that they get their nation back. Even though Louis Ranaud served as the French police captain, but he failed to have the same amount of power compared to his superior Major Strasser or to any other German officer. He was portrayed as a French person, who represented the Vichy France and its influence on its French officers. Louis Ranaud was portrayed as a servant to the German empire and a person, who shared no feelings of his own and failed to understand the difference between right and wrong. Louis showed his act of loyalty only to the superior side, which was Germany in this case. Even though he expressed his loyalty for Major Strasser, but it was just an act in order to satisfy the German officers so they would not suspect him of being against their rule and this act also ensured his own survival and not being arrested or sent to the concentration camps for treason or ideas of resistance. Louis had to follow the commands of Major Strasser and in order to please him, he ended up arresting Laszlo and Ugarte and al so ended up closing Ricks bar in order to show his allegiance. The Vichy French government supported the Germans in their actions due to their fear of being put down by the strong German forces. Also the Vichy government had most of their power in the unoccupied French regions, mainly the Southern parts, where there were no German rule, but however in the regions of occupied France, the Vichy government could not overrule over the Germans laws and they could only enforce their the laws in these regions, if their laws did not contradict with the Germans ways. Even though this film provided a source of entertainment through the romance and drama, it also brought out some of the nature and conditions of World War II of 1942. With the comedy it provided, this film also portrayed the nature of the concentration camps due to the physical condition of Victor Laszlos face and his description of his struggle when he was there. Also the film displayed the Nazi secret police called the Gestapo. It also accurately expressed the existence of the Vichy government in France and their act of loyalty to Germany. As well as during the war and in the movie, many people were looking to escape to the United States or elsewhere in order to avoid the horrible environment of the war or being arrested by the Germans and being sent to the concentration camps. Many people did travel from France to Casablanca in order to escape to America from Lisbon, but letters of transit did not exist to serve as a pass to escape from Europe. The invasion of Paris by German forc es was accurate with the display of well equipped and trained German soldiers, who took over Paris with a surprise and that finalized the surrender of France to Germany. Also Germany capturing Czechoslovakia triggered the beginning of a conflict as other countries joined in order to protect the rights of small nations. With all of this expressed in the movie, the director did intend to capture and focus some of the historical period of World War II as well provide entertainment altogether. All the of addressed accuracies that exist in the movie as well as that happened during the period of the World War II are accurate with the information provided by historians and the encyclopedia of the period of World War II. During the period of World War II, United States not only was awakened by destruction of Pearl Harbor, but also realized the extent of European countries progress in industrialization and technology. Due to the lack of power and lack of involvement by major countries in the League of Nations, it was unable to provide any stability or protection when it was most needed. As of today, the United Nations is represented by nearly all of the countries and thus it has a force and power to tackle any problems around the world.

Character Analysis of Claudius from the Play Hamlet by Shakespeare Essa
Character Analysis of Claudius from the Play Hamlet by Shakespeare In the play, "Hamlet", Shakespeare needed to devize an evil character, a villain that is ambitious, and has the ability to scheme to get what he wants. The character would also have to contain some good qualities, such as kindness and contriteness. These good qualities make the character seem more human and thus, more believable. Claudius is this character. Shakespeare uses Claudius in his revenge theme in this play. Without the acts of Claudius, this theme just would not be. The entire play revolves around what Claudius has done, or will do. The evil traits of Claudius by far outweigh the good things he does. He is very ambitious, perhaps too ambitious. Claudius wanted to be king so badly, that he murdered his own brother to achieve his goal. This is how the revenge theme is weaved into the play. Hamlet, the dead kingââ¬â¢s son learns of the act from a ghost, "A serpent stung me; so the whole ear of Denmark Is by a forged process of my death Rankly abused; but now that noble youth The serpent that did sting thy fatherââ¬â¢s life Now wears his crown." (Act I, Sc. V, Lines 42-46) Claudius not only wanted to be the king of Denmark, he also wanted the queen that came with it. In Act I Sc. II Lines 8-14, Claudius has just recently been crowned king and is addressing the court. He shows in his words how happy he is to be married to Gertrude, the Queen. "herefore our sometime sister, now our queen, The imperial jointress to this warlike state, Have we, as ââ¬Ëtwere with a defeated joy, With an auspicious, and dropping eye, With mirth in funeral, and with dirge in marriage, In equal scale weighing delight and dole, Taken to wife; ...." The ambition of Claudius lays the foundation for the theme of revenge. Without his need to be king and his willingness to do anything for it, the play would be completely different. This evil trait is, in part, what in the end kills Claudius. Claudiusââ¬â¢ other evil trait, his scheming, also leads to his death. An example of one of Claudiusââ¬â¢ many ââ¬Ëplansââ¬â¢ was when he summoned Rozencrantz and Guildenstern to do some spying on Hamlet to find out what was ailing him. "Moreover that we much did long to see you, The need we have to use you did provoke Our hasty sending. Something hav... ...) was very wrong and he realises there is little that he can do to make things well.. " O, my offence is rank, it smells to heaven; It hath the primal eldest curse uponââ¬â¢t, A brothers murder! Pray can I not, Through inclination be as sharp as will. My stronger guilt defeats my stronger intent...." (Act III Sc. IV Lines 39-43) "My words fly up, my thoughts remain below; Words without thoughts never to heaven go." (Act III Sc. IV Lines 100-101) These traits give Claudius a human side and this plays into the authorââ¬â¢s purpose by making the reader wonder if Hamlet is going to do the right thing by killing Claudius. It gives the reader second thoughts. Claudius was the villain in "Hamlet." He showed all the necessary characteristics of an evil character but Shakespeare put some "extra" into him. He did this be giving him somegood characteristics. What he had was a well blended character with the ability to be both a murderous bad guy to a kind hearted good guy. Shakespeare had Claudius fit well into the theme of revenge. It was all centred around him. With out him, It would have been a happy ending, or completely different.

Partial Birth Abortion Act November 5, 2003 :: Government Politics Abortion Essays
Partial Birth Abortion Act November 5, 2003 On November 5, 2003 President Bush placed a national ban on partial birth abortions. This was an act that many felt was outdated. The same proposal was brought upon President Clinton in 1995, but he vetoed it saying it was a birth motherââ¬â¢s right to choose the fate of her unborn child. A partial birth abortion is the process of removing a fetus from the mother just prior to its birth. This procedure is not painless for the mother, or the fetus. The actual procedure involves removing the child limb by limb from the womb. After the initial limb removal, scissors are forced into the childââ¬â¢s skull and a suction tube is inserted to remove the brains of the child. President Bushââ¬â¢s press secretary, Hatsuhisa Takashima, wrote this speech. The author utilizes the problem/solution argument structure and the rhetorical appeals within his speech. The problem/solution that is apparent in the text of this speech is obvious from the very beginning. The President says, ââ¬Å"that the American government has looked away from this violence, but now the government has confronted the violence and come to the defense of the innocent child.â⬠The partial birth abortion was once seen as a medically necessary procedure, but the President points out it is, ââ¬Å"not only cruel to the child, but harmful to the mother, and a violation of medical ethics.â⬠The elected branches of government have worked together to prevent this practice as a means of a solution to the partial birth abortion situation in this country. The signing of the Partial Birth Abortion Act of 2003 shows a major solution by not allowing the problem to continue. In addition to the problem/solution argument structure this speech has ethos mixed in it also. Hatsuhisa Takashima, the author of this speech, held many high titles in his years working in Japan. Just before being appointed to be the Press Secretary of the United States of America he was the General of Administration and Broadcasting Corporation in Hong Kong. Before being appointed to that title he was the Director of United Nations Information Center in Tokyo. He has been involved in a journalism career for most of his life and his writings have been well acclaimed. In the speech he says many facts that lead one to believe that the banning of partial birth abortions is the best solution to the problem.

No Smoking Allowed On the Job or Off Case Study Analysis Essay
Should employers have the right to ban or restrict smoking by their employees at the workplace? Why do you think so? As is the case with OSHA, employees have the right to a safe and healthy workplace. Since smoking impedes on that right, I do believe that employers have the right to ban or restrict employee smoking at the workplace. Second hand smoke is a serious issue, one that is often overlooked by smokers. Nonsmokers have the right to not be exposed to something that they choose not to engage in. It is unfair for employees to be exposed to health risks that they are not personally subjecting themselves to. Additionally, there is some responsibility on the workplace to ensure that added level of a safe and healthy environment. Since exposure to smoke is a health hazard, choosing to restrict or ban it cannot be seen as a violation of personal rights. 2.Should employers have the right to restrict or ban smoking by employees off the job, as Weyco did? Why do you think so? I was torn on this situation as I am a firm believer in personal rights. But considering the added health costs the employer must ensue for their smoking employees, shouldnââ¬â¢t they have the right to say no! I do think that employers should have the right to restrict or ban smoking off the job if it meets certain criteria. For starters, employees must be given ample notification or if the rule is already in place, be notified in advance of applying to the organization. Next, it is important that existing employees affected by the change, as was the case at Weyco, be given the tools and opportunity to quit. I feel 15 months was an ample amount of time, given the tools the organization supplied, to make lifestyle changes if one chose to. Finally, I think there should be ongoing support to educate and assist with the process. There are definitely certain industries that I believe should invoke this. A good example of this would be healthcare providers. Do you know how many times I see the nurse who is going to be assisting me at the hospital or clinic outside smoking cigarettes? Iââ¬â¢ve actually seen oncologists smoking outside the hospital ââ¬â people who fight for lives that have been affected medically by smokingâ⬠¦it enrages me. Thus, I do believe that hospitals should only employ nonsmokers. I must admit when I have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get to work, it infuriates me. I guess you might get a very different answer to these questions if you asked a smoker. 3.Should the government regulate smoking at work? If so, what would be the best public policy? Why do you think so? The simple solution to the problem would be to allow the government to regulate smoking at work. By offering public policy that mandated certain industries have to employ smoke free employees, banning all indoor smoking at work, igniting strict parameters on those industries allowed to have smokers, and continuing to penalize employees from a health insurance perspective ââ¬â the government could greatly help deter or control costs surrounding this awful habit. A possible consideration would be to make smokers fully pay for their own health insurance. If they saw the added cost they have on their employer maybe they would rethink their options. 4.Should multinational firms have a single corporate policy on smoking in the workplace, or vary their policies depending on local laws and norms of behavior in various countries where they do business? Again, this is a question I was thoroughly torn on. Having taken many global business courses, I recognize the importance of doing business according to the local laws and norms. In my opinion the health hazards imposed by smoking and exposure to second hand smoke remain constant regardless of location, local law or behavioral norms. However, it becomes difficult to do business in countries where you invoke rules and regulations that go against what the social norms are. Unfortunately I think if you go against the grain in other countries you are more likely to hit resistance and be unable to find employees to work for you. Although, I also believe to be fair to US employees, national locations should be treated the same. My organization is owned by a Dutch based company and they often invoke policies that seem odd here in the US, but they blanket all decisions across all locations. I canââ¬â¢t decide which makes more sense. My business hat says no they should not have a single policy but my human resources hat says yes they should.

Conduct a Stakeholder Analysis for a Planned Upgrade
As you know, my company is planning to construct a nuclear power plant in Oregon. Indeed, the conduct stakeholder analysis is important as a prerequisite of the decision approving the plan because stakeholders play an important role for the projects such as project stakeholders are involved in or affected by the project activity. The project manager must take the time to identify, understand, and manage the relationships between all stakeholders of the project. The use of four framework can help organizations meet the needs and expectations of stakeholders. And the senior member of the Board is the key stakeholders.Accordingly, to conduct stakeholder analysis for a plan to upgrade the software product successfully. We need to analyze the stakeholders are and what is its impact on the success of the project. Sets of project stakeholders include: Internal Stakeholders â⬠¢Top management â⬠¢Accountant â⬠¢Other functional managers â⬠¢Project team members External Stakehold ers â⬠¢Clients â⬠¢Competitors â⬠¢Suppliers â⬠¢Environmental, political, consumer and other intervener groups. Important tasks of the project leader are to have good relationships with stakeholders, understand correctly and meet their expectations. In addition, to the success of software projects, we should analyze the following points in order of importance: Support of leadership, The participation of users, The project management experience The explicit goal The range is reduced Standard software platform The basic requirements do not change Methodology form Reliable estimate In addition to hard skills and soft skills, more and more as the project leader of more work such as planning, organizing, budgeting, adjust the plan. etc. This work not only the project leader to implement but also to have analytical logic must have the foresight to identify the future steps of the project.

The Effect Of Spatial Form Environmental Sciences Essay
the focal point of undertakings and surveies refering the betterment and upgrading of these informal colonies was on a local graduated table ( within the colony ) and neglected the betterment in relation to the planned countries around and the whole metropolis, particularly when they become a strategic site in the metropolis and acquire an unreasonable addition in their significance. This wider position which back uping informal colony development on the spacial cloth of the metropolis as a whole is of import for metropoliss are planned in an incorporate manner, while these colonies appear to be random in their location and spacial signifier. Therefore understanding the consequence of spacial signifier of informal colonies is indispensable as lending issue in integrating of these countries with a more structured and definable form of spacial development of the metropolis, peculiarly factors of spacial signifier have non gained adequate attending until late for betterment informal colonies. This chapter intends to explicate the background of the survey and discourse several related surveies to place its job statement. Based on these arguments, the survey determines the specific research job. Consequently, the research inquiry, research aims, and research premise will be formulated. Finally, this chapter presents range of the survey, research model, and construction of the thesis.1.2 Research BackgroundRecent urban surveies give an increasing significance to the spacial issues of urban countries, particularly in relation to concept of integrating of these countries in the metropolis. Research workers in the field of urban design and urban planning explain that since the urban integrating has a physical every bit good as a societal significance, the spacial signifier of urban countries demands to be understood as a lending factor in organizing form of integrating and segregation in metropoliss ( Hillier and Vaughan, 2007 ) . The informal colonies are considered as self organized countries in the metropolis which are characterized by illegal inhabiting of the land, inappropriate layout program and un- serviced or minimally serviced land ( Abbott & A ; Douglas, 2003 ) . Informal colonies can be classified harmonizing to location and morphological characters as interior ââ¬â metropolis colonies and peripheral colonies. UNCHS study ( 1996 ) argued that the peripheral colonies are incorporated to the interior metropolis by urban development. Recife declaration ( 1996 ) when focused on the country of hapless people in the metropolis considered that the critical issue is the integrating of informal colonies into the metropolis, and confirmed that these colonies are built-in parts of the metropolis which represent a physical portion, but the job facing governments and faculty members in this issue is to recognize the factors that facilitate betterment of informal colonies towards the integrating with the urban cloth of the metropolis. Most of the surveies about betterment of informal colonies have been oriented to the disclosure of societal and economic factors that could impact colonies betterment procedure without sing spacial and location factors which have gained small attending in the literature ( Greene, 2003, Sobreira, 2003 and Karimi et al. , 2007 ) . Some research workers such as Mukhija ( 2001, 2002 ) and Sobreira, ( 2003 ) argued in the context of their surveies that the spacial factors can impact the success of betterment procedure of informal colonies. UNCHS ( 2003 ) study besides puts frontward that these factors can help the accommodation of more effectual schemes when seeking to better the status of these countries. the importance and function of spacial signifier is discernible in surveies of urban research workers related to integrating procedure of city`s different urban countries including informal colonies. Nunes da sylva et Al. ( 2001 ) when studied integrating of public infinites as urban countries found that these spacial factors are most critical. : location of the infinite in the metropolis, handiness to the public infinite, the quality of urban cloth where the public infinite exists, the quality of the sites urban design, including its integrating in urban axes. Costa ( 2002 ) examined the integrating of another type of urban countries ââ¬â new and old seaport areas- during spacial factors. and when he used town and site degree of integrating he concluded that the chief factors are: propinquity and easy entree, continuity of public infinite ; hinder of the urban barriers ; chief urban axes extension. The survey of tall edifice urban countries showed that The part of spacial factors considered as important factors for the integrating within the city`s context, and it is revealed that the location ; spacial demands of environing street infinite and entree to the country affect the integrating procedure ( Ali & A ; Aksamija, 2008 ) . Legeby ( 2008, 2009, 2010 ) argued that handiness to some of public services in residential urban countries ( vicinities ) , considers as a chief spacial factor in integrating procedure which affects the spacial connexion of different vicinities, therefore globally ( at the city`s degree ) integrated residential countries have a better possibility to pull people from outside of the country and more public urban life. Harmonizing Goncalves et Al. ( 2009 ) integrating of vicinities and the urban installations can be enhanced with centrality as spacial factor in the country of transit corridor ; In add-on, a transit system can help handiness and motion between public installations and residential countries. Urban surveies referred to the function of spacial factors in attacks for betterment of informal colonies which occupy different rates of residential countries in metropoliss of developing states, and how these factors contribution necessary to the integrating of these colonies for the betterment procedure. Hillier et Al. ( 2000 ) explained that spacial factors, particularly the layout of the colony and its relation to its urban context, have played a chief function in consolidation of the informal colonies. The critical spacial factors which facilitates for the colony to incorporate within the context of the metropolis are edge commercial land usage, spacial constellation factors ââ¬â such as integrating to whole system ( planetary ) , connectivity- and location of the colony. Greene ( 2002 ; 2003 ) presented farther factors in add-on of border motion economic system factor, The factors contain the analyses of syntactic features of the parts of the metropolis including the infor mal colonies, the distinction between motion in streets and back streets, colonies location in the metropolis: chief metropolis or older territories and the function of the proviso of urban services. Using spacial informations is indispensable to back up the integrating of informal colonies into the formal metropolis through upgrading procedure ; therefore the informal colonies are required to be operated at a metropolitan degree and at colony degree. At the first degree the impact of the location of the colony is emerged as a spacial component on the broad urban construction, and colony handiness to foreigners which related chiefly with the land usage and interfacing activities. At colony and adjacent countries degree, the soft boundary characteristic demands to be understood and making chief motion corridors as a web if these colonies are to be integrated spatially with the surrounding ( Abbott, 2001, 2002 ) . In add-on, Abbott ( 2003 ) argued that motion and entree as spacial sphere are cardinal issues that have to be introduced for accomplishing spacial integrating into the environing countries during informal colony upgrading. Supplying spacial linkages to the environing countries by utilizing of GIS system play a cardinal function in making a model for integrating. This attack provides formal roads ( i.e. vehicular entree ) along the chief paths already defined organically within the colony. Haferburg ( 2002 ) concluded that within the metropolitan spatial development model, for the socio ââ¬â spacial integrating of informal colonies, it is indispensable return into consideration the factor of location of the informal colony, in add-on the bordering vacant land, which might work good as a topographic point of shared attractive force for the different adjacent countries. Harmonizing to Mora ( 2003 ) the integrating of informal colonies besides depends on consequence of grid of the colony on building of centrality ; during alterations of handiness of certain countries create strategic locations on the grid for big graduated table commercialism which so can be used as a new signifier of communal centre. In add-on the consequence of the grid of the colony on the integrating of local commercial land utilizations based on formal domestic commercialism located in partly converted houses and the informal economic system represented by street markets. There is major concentrating on the commercial land usage in big informal colony as an extra chief spacial factor for integrating with the surrounding and the urban cloth of the metropolis as a whole. and this related to interplay between commercial land usage locations and street web properties, The big informal colonies with higher grades of consolidation seems to maximise their economic benefit non merely through stores on their outward borders but besides suiting internal markets which links its local economic system to the wider urban context ( Shafiei,2007 ) . The major job in informal colonies rises from the atomization and their internal spacial construction ( street grids ) , and this causes inability to associate to their wider context ( environing countries and urban cloth of the metropolis ) . therefore the focal point should be on the path choice scheme ( route filtering ) as the chief spacial factor of the integrating of a strategically placed cardinal informal countries based on comprehensive survey of street features ( most appropriate breadths and street profiles ) and set of be aftering ushers lines ( land usage, edifice tallness, denseness ) ( karimi et Al. , 2007 ) .1.3 Problem StatementIn recent decennaries a great trade of involvement has been given to the informal colonies in the metropoliss of the developing states. Most surveies on these colonies have focused on procedures and policies related to betterment or upgrading of these countries at the local degree ( within single colony ) , there are small work that looks at t he wider impact in relation with the planned cloth of the metropolis and its vicinities ( Abbott 2001 ) . In add-on Most of the surveies about betterment of informal colonies have focused on disclosure of societal and economic factors that could impact colonies betterment procedure without sing spacial and location factors which have gained small attending in the literature ( Mukhija,2001 ; Greene, 2003 ; Sobreira, 2003 and Karimi et al. , 2007 ) . The job is that there is a spread between the informal countries and their milieus ( planned ) country of the metropolis in many facets including spacial features, which supposed to promote the economical and societal interaction, and every bit good this spread considered as a barrier to the integrating of these informal countries in the urban cloth of the metropolis. Consequently, a demand arises for surveies send oning farther, and concentrate on the relationship of these countries with the environing spatially. Based on research background and the old surveies, the spacial issues play a important function in accomplishing the grade of integrating of urban countries including informal colonies in the metropolis ââ¬Ës urban cloth. the old surveies, which are related straight to the informal colonies, presented assorted lending spacial factors in integrating procedure of these colonies with the environing countries. The most of import factors included ( inch commercial land usage, internal commercial land usage, motion web features, location of the colony, surrounding land utilizations, soft boundaries, grid form of the colony, constellation factors, distinction between motion in streets and back streets, making chief motion web, centrality, street markets, path ( chief streets ) choice scheme, outsider entree to the colony ) ( Hillier et al. , 2000 ; Greene, 2002 ; 2003 ; Abbott,2001, ; 2002 ; Abbott,2003 ; Haferburg, 2002 ; Mora,2003 ; Shafiei,2007 ; karimi et Al. , 2007 ) . These surveies were conducted through the procedures of betterment of informal colonies in different metropoliss of developing states including self-improvement attack. It has been observed that the bulk of these surveies addressed the spacial issues in peripheral informal colonies. The surveies mentioned in the background about integrating of urban countries within the metropolis exemplify how during the undertakings of urban planning and urban design these countries can incorporate locally with the surrounding and the metropolis as a whole. These surveies presented assorted spacial factors such as ( Strategic location, Accessibility, The quality of the sites urban design, Proximity and easy entree, web of efficient public conveyance systems to the country, The propinquity to the new centrality, Pedestrian & A ; vehicular motion forms, Public infinite design continuity, Centrality of the country ) which show the significance of these factors in bettering the quality of infinites of these urban countries and increase their efficiency to incorporate with the surrounding ( Nunes da sylva et Al. ,2001 ; Costa,2002 ; Ali & A ; Aksamija, 2008 ; Legeby,2008, 2009, 2010 ; Goncalves et Al. ,2009 ) , therefore this procedure leads to raise the quality of life of the occu pants in the metropolis at local degree ( domestic, vicinities ) and planetary degree ( metropolis, metropolitan ) ( Ribeiro and Holanda, 2007 ) . The survey of theoretical accounts of urban countries integrating during spacial issues assist to obtain assorted spacial factors which contribute in integrating procedure, which support later in finding the factors that had non been addressed in informal colonies surveies. Through treatments of old relevant surveies on the construct of spacial integrating and the influence of spacial facets on the integrating of informal colonies in the metropolis, the following two important constructs have been detected: Most of the surveies about integrating of informal colonies was done on the peripheral colonies, and seldom discussed the spacial relationships of interior ââ¬â metropolis informal colonies in the cloth of the metropolis, which are wholly different from the peripheral colonies. Harmonizing to ( UNCHS, 1982 ) the interior -city informal colonies are situated near to the most incorporate urban countries, largely present high densenesss, and have reached the bounds of growing. These colonies are normally bounded by roads, which are extremely integrated in relation to the whole construction of the metropolis. These colonies face spacial restraint, and hence tend to show a extremely heavy spacial construction. Besides, the propinquity of cardinal sites to occupation chances makes them a more sensible and engorged site ( Sobreira, 2003 ) . The old surveies on informal colonies have non addressed all the spacial factors that affect the integrating of these colonies, where we see that there is more spacial factors contribute in integrating procedure of different urban countries as revealed in surveies related integrating of different urban countries in the metropolis such as ( existing urban barriers, propinquity and handiness to public installations, handiness to working population, handiness to residential population, propinquity to a new centrality, web of public conveyance to the country, the extension of chief urban axes to the country, the status of next streets, continuity of public infinites ) . In add-on of deficiency of surveies on spacial features of informal colonies and their betterment in integrating with the environing countries, these two constructs act as index to demo that the spacial relationship of inner- metropolis informal colonies with the urban cloth of the metropolis is non clear, despite the multiplicity and assortment of tendencies sing the consequence of the spacial relationship on the integrating of informal colonies in the metropolis. This job is truly obvious In instance of informal colonies of Erbil metropolis, which is selected as a instance survey country, where most of the informal colonies has become interior ââ¬â metropolis informal vicinities or parts of planned vicinities with using self betterment attack. Erbil city`s urban countries in general has passed through rapid development since ninetieth of last century and the Iraq release 2003 accelerated urban development, enlargement of the metropolis, and fixing maestro programs by taking benefits from net incomes of Kurdistan part oil gross, therefore this state of affairs affected the planning of land utilizations and tendencies of enlargements of the metropolis, These rapid developments lead to a province of decomposition of these colonies with the urban cloth of the metropolis. Based on the job statement, this survey attempts to reply the undermentioned research inquiries: Make the spacial factors assist integrating of inner-city informal colonies with the environing countries? What are the perceptual experience of occupants toward spacial relationship of informal colonies and their integrating in the metropolis? What are the most influential factors which interpret the spacial relationship of interior -city informal colonies with the surrounding?1.4 Research AimsThe aims of this research are as follows: To analyze the spacial factors that influences the integrating of interior ââ¬â metropolis informal colonies in the urban cloth of the metropolis. To find the perceptual experience of occupants towards the integrating of informal colonies with the urban cloth of the metropolis through a set of spacial factors. To place the strength of relationship between the spacial factors of interior -city informal colonies and the integrating procedure in the metropolis.1.5 Rationale of the surveyThe chief grounds for carry oning this survey are as follows: This survey addresses the spacial efficiency of the inner- metropolis informal settlement`s layout to incorporate into the urban cloth of the metropolis, and therefore it deals with the planning and design of these urban countries in relation with environing planned countries. The spacial issues of these informal colonies requires considerable precedence to be studied, that most of the research workers in this field mentioned that small attending paid to spacial topics in informal colonies. The deficiency of surveies related to informal colonies in Erbil metropolis in general, particularly physical and spacial side, and their province one time considered as inner- metropolis colonies. The urban planning undertakings of Erbil metropolis such as maestro programs and territory plans- including the last Erbil maestro program undertaking in 2007- did n't pay adequate attending to betterment of these colonies and their state of affairs in urban cloth of the metropolis.1.6 Scope of the surveyThis survey seeks to understand the integrating of the informal colonies through the spacial relationships of these colonies with the environing countries. It aims to analyze the influence of spacial facets on the integrating of inner-city informal colonies through a set of spacial factors, this integrating is support the betterment of these colonies on the degree of the adjacent countries and the metropolis as a whole. Erbil metropolis is selected to be the instance survey of the research due to fact that it offers typical instance sing to location of its informal colonies as interior ââ¬â metropolis colonies, which surrounded with planned incorporate urban countries and streets, so these colonies distinguished by being tangled with the planned urban environment, but with different characteristics of the physical and socio-economic development. It is important to observe that a new characteristic is reshaping the urban environment in Erbil metropolis during pattern urban planning and urban design mechanisms for development and enlargement of the metropolis. These developments which are represented in land usage and transit planning undertakings, made these informal countries inconsistent with the environing planned countries spatially ( Figure 1.2 ) , hence the research is limited to analyze the spacial facets consequence on the integrating of these informal colonies in this planned urban environment of Erbil metropolis. ( Beginning: Erbil Master Plan Report 2008 )1.7 Structure of the thesisThis research is organized into six chapters as follows: Chapter one is a preliminary chapter displays the background of the research and discusses old related surveies specifically: surveies about spacial facets in different urban countries including informal colonies. It consists of besides job statement, the research aims, principle of the survey, the range of the survey, research model, and the organisation of the survey. Chapter two represents the literature reappraisal, which Consists of three chief pillars of the survey: Informal colonies, spacial facets, and Integration procedure. A theoretical survey of informal colonies will be analyzed and investigated from the facets of the subject of the research. A elaborate survey of spacial facets in urban countries in the metropolis and their characteristics in the informal colonies will be presented. The chapter besides discusses the integrating in urban countries in the degree of environing country and in the degree of the whole metropolis, with concentrating on spacial concerns, the integrating as constructs in attacks of bettering informal colonies. Chapter three intends to specify and explicate proposed spacial factors that affect the integrating of interior -city informal colonies in the metropolis. As good, it surveies and buttockss mensurating tools for these proposed factors. The chapter nowadayss besides the development of informal colonies in Iraq in general and Erbil metropolis in item with concentrating on the selected informal colony Badawa in the survey country ( Erbil City ) and its surrounding planned countries. Chapter four presents the research methodological analysis and explains the type of methodological analysis that will be used in the survey. It shows in item sampling methods, informations aggregation, and in the terminal determines acceptable methods of analysis can be applied in the following chapter. Chapter five focal points on the analysis of the informations aggregation. The application of analysis techniques ( quantitative method ) will be achieved. It presents and discusses the consequences, which lead to the decisions and recommendations in the following chapter. Chapter six includes research decisions and cardinal findings. It discusses the manner in which the survey has answered the research inquiries. The chapter besides shows the scope of part of the research in mensurating the spacial facets consequence on the integrating of interior metropolis informal colonies in Erbil metropolis. The last subdivision outlines the recommendations of the survey.1.8 SummeryThis introductory chapter addressed foremost the back land of the research which dealt with the importance of spacial signifier of informal colonies and integrating with their surrounding within the metropolis context. Furthermore, it focused on the surveies used spacial factors for integrating of different urban countries including informal colonies. Then, the chapter focused on the job statement of the research and explained the grounds of survey the spacial facets in integrating of inner- metropolis of informal colonies, this led to explicating the research aims and inquiries. The principle and the range of the survey were presented which considered the deficiency of surveies related spacial facets in informal colonies, importance of integrating of informal colonies and the deficiency of surveies on spacial and physical side of Erbil city`s informal colonies as justifications. Finally the model and the lineation of the research were presented which consisted of five chapters. This first chapter followed by the literature reappraisal which will concentrate on the informal colonies in developing states, infinites in urban countries including informal colonies, and the old surveies related utilizing spacial factors in integrating of informal colonies and other signifiers of urban countries in the metropolis.
